Richard haying, July 2005   At the Thompson Rapids

The family of Richard Thomas - Pan, Jeremy, Sarah, Nell and Jenny - is grateful to the community for sharing the memorial to Richard last Saturday. We were left with the feeling that he would have approved. He would have been very happy with Scotia Junction — who they are and what they do. He would have been smiling all over the place at the catering provided by the Berriedale Babes, but he loved them anyway, even without all that marvellous food. The speakers would have pleased him, although it is possible he would have argued with some of the points they made. Thank you to everyone who came to wish him well. You know he would have wished you well too, if he could have — if only he could have. Thank you. April 13, 2006

"Modern living tends to belittle, almost obliterate, the habit our forebearers had of rallying to each other. We live cocooned in marvels of technology, isolated in imaginary self sufficiency. This is most true of people in cities and big towns, but more and more, it afflicts us country folks too.

We were bred 100,000 years ago to life in small communities. We knew each other and we knew where we fit. What we had, we made. Now, more and more of us go day after day, never touching anything we have made or done for ourselves, things we can take pride in. All we have is things we buy. The loss is more than pride. It is the quiet, competent, confidence that what we do matters.
