Box 533 ARMOUR TOWNSHIP COUNCIL NEWSLETTER - SPRING 2001 GENERAL INFORMATION - The interim tax bills for 2001 are due in two installments, the first half being due on April 11th, 2001 and the second half due May 11th, 2001. The implementation of two installments appears to be well received by the majority of the ratepayers and we sincerely hope that it does not cause undo problems or concerns. WEB SITE - Visit our web site at www.hips.com/armour to find minutes and agendas of Council meetings, newsletters and any other pertinent information. ISSUES UNDER CONSIDERATION BY COUNCIL Hwy. 11 Expansion - Negotiations are underway with MTO for Township concerns pertaining to alignment, access and safety consideration for the Highway section from the south boundary of the Township to the south entrance of Burk's Falls. Amalgamation - Exploration of a potential economic/political union of five municipalities (Burk's Falls, Armour, Perry, McMurrich/Monteith and Ryerson) to create a stronger regional municipality - talks progressing over next 6 months. Eastholme, Home for the Aged - Due to a very large increase in required financial support for a proposed expansion to Eastholme facilities, Armour is adopting a pro-active stance to obtain local support from contributing municipalities and the Provincial Government for further assessment and the possibility of replacement by a facility to service the local municipalities. Proxy Voting System - Due to problems encountered in Elections 2000 a formal request has been made to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs to revamp the proxy vote system or to replace it with a workable Vote by Mail system. Work will continue on assessing Vote by Mail for implementation in the Township. LANDFILL/RECYCLING - We again ask for continued support of the recycling program. Please help maximize our landfill space by removing, rinsing, and bringing all your recyclables in for processing. Keep those valuable aluminum and steel cans out of your garbage and into the recycling box. Please remember that blue identification cards are still required. Effective September 1st, 1999, tipping fees will be charged on all truck loads, including shingles, but excluding household garbage and recyclables. A physical survey and groundwater monitoring program is well underway to permit assessment of present state of landfill site and remaining capacity. BUILDING DEPARTMENT - Paul Schaefer, Chief Building Official is available at the municipal office Monday mornings from 9 - 12 and Thursday afternoons from 1 - 4. You may contact Paul, or the office staff with any questions or concerns regarding building in the Township. Please be advised that all structural additions or improvements require a building permit. BY-LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER - The municipality has hired a By-law Enforcement Officer and will be preparing a Property Standards By-law. Council is looking for volunteers to sit on a committee to establish the By-law. The By-law Enforcement Officer will also be enforcing the Dog By-law. Please ensure that you have purchased your 2001 dog tag. The By-law Enforcement Officer is James Mahoney - phone # 705-382-0503. We need volunteers to serve on important new Committees in the Township. Please contact the Township office or any member of Council to express your interest to serve. Finally, if there are any concerns, issues or suggestions that you would like to see raised or discussed with Council, please get in touch with the Office to have your concerns placed on the agenda. Council and staff encourage all to participate in your local government to help maintain and improve our community. Sincerely, ARMOUR TOWNSHIP COUNCIL Frank Gill, Reeve
